There is nothing quite like a classic burger, cooked to perfection and loaded with condiments on a soft, fresh bun. But just because you like burgers, doesn’t mean you have to be unhealthy. Vegan burgers are one of our favorite healthy recipes, and this one has the added bonus of around 30 grams of protein from the tempeh and chickpea patties!
Aim for flavor!

It seems like there’s no end to the creativity you can apply here. There are dozens of variations available in addition to just converting to a vegan burger recipe. The key is all in the flavor of the patty. We like adding tempeh to the burger for its nutty taste, which gets even better when you add chickpeas! Also, you can add that “umami” touch with a little sun-dried tomatoes, walnuts, and nutritional yeast.
And of course, fresh garlic and onion never go astray!
It’s all about texture!
The other secret to a great vegan burger recipe is the texture. When you bite into these patties, the smooth texture of the chickpeas works with the chunky tempeh to create a super-satisfying burger. The wholesome, nutty flavor makes our mouths water. These never last long at our barbecues – we hope you love them too!

Get cooking!
We’re sure you’ve noticed that every burger benefits from a bit of caramelization, and vegan recipes are no different. Make sure you get a lovely golden brown color on the patties. For bonus points, you can also brown the bun!
Once your tempeh chickpea burgers are off the grill, this is where the fun starts – especially for your guests. Make sure you provide plenty of condiments for them to load up on. Some of our favorites are tomato slices, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, mustard and of course – some homemade vegan mayonnaise!
That’s it – a quick and healthy burger recipe for your next barbecue. If you make it, please let us know how it turned out with a comment and a rating. Every bit of feedback helps make the blog even better.
Now, how about some other goodies for that BBQ? We suggest our Creamy Potato Salad with Vegan Mayo. Or if you’re in charge of the dips, how about some Salsa and Guacamole?
