The first time I learned how to make easy tartar sauce from scratch, I was kicking myself for not trying it earlier. Until now I had always bought it in a bottle, but after making yummy battered ToFish, I decided to take a crack at making it myself. I was blown away by how easy and delicious it was.

- Green onions
- Lemon or caper brine
- Dijon mustard
- Black pepper
How to Make Easy Tartar Sauce (from scratch!)
Prepare ingredients: Finely chop the green onions, capers, dill pickles, and fresh dill.
Make the tartar sauce: Add all the ingredients to a small bowl and mix until combined.
Alternative Ingredients
This east tartar sauce recipe is super simple to adapt according to your tastes. In a pinch, you can swap dill picked for dill pickle relish.
For a more briny taste, use caper brine in place of lemon juice.
No green onions? Swap them out for 1 tablespoon of minced white onion.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
- 1/4–1/3 cup finely chopped dill pickles (1-2 medium), adjust to suit your taste
- 2 tablespoons capers, drained and roughly chopped
- 2 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped
- 2 green onions, finely sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice or caper brine
- 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
- Pinch freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Make the tartar sauce: Place ingredients into a medium size bowl, stir to combine.
- Keep cool: Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Enjoy!
