Easy Tartar Sauce Recipe | Vegan

This easy tartar sauce recipe will show you how to make tartar sauce from scratch, with just a few storecupboard ingredients. Creamy, tangy, and a little bit zesty, this recipe tastes amazing with battered ‘fish’ (ToFish), jackfruit ‘crab’ cakes, and even as a dip for french fries!

The first time I learned how to make easy tartar sauce from scratch, I was kicking myself for not trying it earlier.  Until now I had always bought it in a bottle, but after making yummy battered ToFish, I decided to take a crack at making it myself. I was blown away by how easy and delicious it was. 

Ingredients for my Easy Tartar Sauce Recipe

You only need a few ingredients to make easy tartar sauce at home, most of which you’ll likely already have in the fridge!

The key ingredients you’ll need are: 

  • Vegan Mayonaise (see my post for an easy homemade recipe!)
  • Dill Pickles
  • Capers
  • Fresh Dill

I’ve also added a few extras to this easy tartar sauce recipe to give it a little extra oomph! You’ll also need:

How to Make Easy Tartar Sauce (from scratch!)

Prepare ingredients: Finely chop the green onions, capers, dill pickles, and fresh dill.

Make the tartar sauce: Add all the ingredients to a small bowl and mix until combined. 

Alternative Ingredients

This east tartar sauce recipe is super simple to adapt according to your tastes. In a pinch, you can swap dill picked for dill pickle relish.

For a more briny taste, use caper brine in place of lemon juice.

No green onions? Swap them out for 1 tablespoon of minced white onion.

How to Eat and Store Tartar Sauce

Serve this easy tartar sauce recipe with battered ‘fish’ (tofish), jackfruit ‘crab’ cakes, fries, or any other fried food you fancy!

Your sauce will stay fresh for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the fridge.

This easy vegan tartar sauce recipe takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and is so much better than store-bought! 


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
  • 1/41/3 cup finely chopped dill pickles (1-2 medium), adjust to suit your taste
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained and roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 2 green onions, finely sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice or caper brine
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • Pinch freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Make the tartar sauce: Place ingredients into a medium size bowl, stir to combine.
  2. Keep cool: Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Enjoy!
  • Store in an airtight container (I like to use a mason jar) and consume within 3 days.
