What is Acai?

Acai berries are reddish-purple fruits that look and taste like grapes. An official “super-food”, these Brazilian berries are known for health benefits including weight loss, skin health, and improved athletic performance. This is thanks to their high levels of fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats.

In the US, you will find dried, powdered, and frozen acai. This last one is what we will be using to make our acai bowl. Frozen acai generally comes in 3.5oz/100g pouches, and can be bought online or at Trader Joe’s (the more cost-effective option!) In terms of brands, my favorites are Tamor Acai or Sambazon.

Acai Bowl Ingredients

This acai bowl recipe is super simple and uses a combination of frozen fruits, frozen acai puree, and plant milk or fruit juice. It has a thick, creamy consistency that is perfect topped with fresh fruit, nut butter, granola, seeds…etc

To make the recipe, you will need:

Frozen Açaí Puree

You can use any brand, as long as it is unsweetened.

Frozen Banana

A frozen banana will add natural sweetness and creaminess to your acai bowl. To ensure smooth blending, slice the banana before freezing.

Frozen Strawberries

As with the banana, make sure you slice the strawberries for better blending.

Plant Milk or Fruit Juice

It’s up to you whether you use plant milk or fruit juice. Plant milk will give you a creamier bowl, while fruit juice will be sweeter. I’d encourage you to play around with combinations until you find your favorite!

Maple syrup or Agave nectar (optional)

If you like your smoothie bowls a little sweeter, then feel free to add a tablespoon of maple syrup or agave nectar.

How to Make an Acai Bowl

  1. Before you can make your bowl, you will need to freeze the fruit! Slice the banana and strawberries and place them onto a lined baking sheet or silicone tray. Transfer into the freezer and leave for 1-2 hours.
  2. Once you have prepared the acai bowl ingredients, place all the ingredients into a high-powered blender and blitz until smooth.
  3. Pause the blender and scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. Scoop into a bowl and sprinkle with your toppings!

Can I Make Acai Bowls Ahead?

The dish will be better prepared just before eating so that you can enjoy it while it’s still frozen. To save time I would recommend freezing your fruit in advance. You can keep frozen bananas and strawberries in an airtight container in the freezer for up to two weeks.
